Status on national core elements for antimicrobial stewardship programmes in the WHO African Region

The World Health Organization (WHO) in the African Region has assessed progress in strengthening national capacity for effective antimicrobial stewardship interventions to mitigate the threat of AMR. The region bears the majority of the global burden of AMR, increasing healthcare costs and economic burdens. The document highlights challenges in funding, policies, governance, and training, emphasizing the need for more visible government and political leadership to promote responsible use of antimicrobials.
